say anything

it was 1989 and i saw say anything at the local theatre with my friend, cory.  almost twenty years later, it remains one of my favourite movies.

she’s gone. she gave me a pen. i gave her my heart, she gave me a pen.

lloyd dobler and diane court,  the improbable couple, the underachiever and the validectorian — they can’t help but fall in love the summer before diane leaves for college in england.  i don’t think there’s a girl in my generation who hasn’t secretly longed for a lloyd dobler moment.  you know the one:  he stands outside her bedroom window and plays peter gabriel’s in your eyes from a boom box held over his head, all to win her heart.  the quintessential illustration of teenage love — raw, brooding, consuming.

everything else means nothing to me. if i hurt you again, i’ll die.

despite the odds, everything works out for lloyd & diane.  they travel to england together and, presumably, live happily ever after.  i generally don’t like postcard-happy-ending movies, but for some reason, i wouldn’t want this one to end any other way.  in fact, i’d still like a lloyd dobler moment of my own.

it’s funny you should say that, because i never thought it all worked out. i loved the ending just because it was left as a huge question mark. yes, they decided to take that huge step and blast off in a plane together, but who knows where that journey lead? the way it ends with the seatbelt sign going off, it’s almost saying…okay, you think the hard part is over? it’s just getting started. such an awesome movie!!

interesting. you’re right, though, the ending really isn’t an ending. i guess it was enough for me to know that they left together, that they took the leap, despite the odds stacked against them. it seems i always root for the underdog.

speaking of awesome movies, clue is in my queue to watch again very soon 🙂
