nineteen

a friend of mine recently blogged about his experience of getting a tattoo. i was reading along and one of the comments took me by surprise. i couldn’t stop reading it; so simple and yet so profound.

i was sitting next to a man holding his daughter yesterday.

“i want a tattoo, daddy,” she said.

“no, no… i don’t like tattoos.”

“but your arms?” she was confused.

“tattoos never go away. they tell about who you used to be and sometimes people change.”

the little girl traced a bird on his forearm.

“i think you used to be very beautiful.”

to me, tattoos are significant in that they are both deliberate and permanent — like a scar of our own choosing, marking an event or a memory or a passion. there’s something intense about the choice and the process and the result. i have one tattoo and i’ve been recently considering another. i think 2009 will be the year.

You have got me thinking about a tattoo again. I may just pull the trigger….this time.

you should definitely do it this time. be warned, though, they’re kinda like chips, it’s hard to have just one…
