Heather Dyan Smith is a Maryland-based photographer, storyteller, and scientist drawn to thresholds—the bleeding edges between science and art, the known and the mysterious, the intimate and the infinite.
Her scientific background taught her to observe closely: to notice patterns and relationships, light and balance, change over time. Photography extends that practice beyond observation into presence—a way of being fully with what is, attentive to what reveals itself when we slow down enough to notice.
Her eye is drawn to the elemental and ephemeral: shifting light and shadow, nature, human connections, small details, unguarded moments. She is endlessly fascinated by the moon, its light and cycles, and by the ways the natural world reminds us that we are not simply observers, but participants in something larger than ourselves.
With a scientist’s curiosity and a storyteller’s heart, Heather uses photography and art journaling to explore the space between observation and imagination, seeking connection, wonder, and mystery in the world as it is. Her work is an invitation to pay attention, to be present, and to wonder without always needing an answer.
Her work has been exhibited at Long View Gallery in Washington, D.C. and Peel Gallery + Photo Lab in Carrboro, North Carolina.
